Current Topics in Biophysics
Current Topics in Biophysics has its roots in the initiative of members of the Polish Biophysical Society, who established the journal under the Polish title „Zagadnienia Biofizyki Współczesnej„. This step marked an important stage in the formation of the Polish scientific community engaged in interdisciplinary research on physical phenomena and processes occurring in living organisms. The main goal of the initial publication was to present the research problems of Polish biophysical centers to a wide audience and to integrate the community.
The first volume of the journal was published in 1976 by Państwowe Wydawnictwo Naukowe oddział w Łodzi, under the editorship of Wanda Leyko. In this and subsequent volumes, various materials were published, including research reports, scientific commentaries, review articles, and theoretical works covering a broad spectrum of biophysics, such as mathematical biophysics, bioenergetics, biophysics of macromolecules, biophysics of biological membranes, as well as biophysics of cells, tissues, and organs, and radiation biophysics.
A pivotal moment in the journal’s history was 1991, when a strategic decision was made to open up to the international scientific community. Volume 16 was published in English, and the journal’s title was changed to „Current Topics in Biophysics„. At this time, the editorial team was also strengthened by inviting several recognized scientists from leading European and American universities to collaborate, which raised the prestige and reach of the publication. The editor-in-chief during this period was Feliks Jaroszyk, and the editorial office was located at the Department of Biophysics of the Medical Academy in Poznań.
In 1997, there was a change in the position of editor-in-chief – Andrzej Dobek took over. Since then, the editorial office has been continuously located at the Faculty of Physics, currently the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. Following the retirement of Professor Andrzej Dobek, the continuity of publishing Current Topics in Biophysics was interrupted.
Currently, from 2025, the head of the Editorial Office is Prof. Maciej Kozak.
